Visual Merchandiser and Pinterest
Since we ventured into the world of Pinterest, the team at Visual Merchandiser have started to find inspiration from a variety of sources. Probably the biggest source of inspiration for our work has been the array of window displays we are able to ‘pin’ from different years and different designers. Being able to see an array of window displays in one place can help us to plan retail displays of the future. We learned that mannequins do not necessarily have to be a female mannequin in a standing position. We have found mannequins who are sitting down on raised platforms, mannequins with Christmas baubles for heads and a mannequin hanging upside down from a swing. Seeing these window designs really enable us to think outside of the box and create unique and daring window displays in the future. Another feature of the various Pinterest displays we have really taken inspiration from is the colour schemes used. As we searched through the numerous colour schemes, we found the deep, vivid shades really brought the whole display to life, especially if the mannequins used are plain white. The contrast from light shades to deep colours adds a complex element to the window which will intrigue customers to enter the store.
As well as window displays, we also took a great amount of inspiration from thousands of hairstyle ‘pins’ which will no doubt inspire the wigs we use in the future. We loved wavy long hair which added volume and life to a typical haircut. We particularly liked one particular haircut in which a girl has long wavy brunette hair, which she keeps in place by a twisted section of her own hair which is tied around the crown. In addition to this hair style, we also loved Kim Kardashian’s fish tail plait and an unkempt bun rocked by a blogger. Another blogger even had blue hair with pink ombre ends which we think would look great on a mannequin standing beside a plain white background.
We also gained a lot of inspiration from beauty on our beauty board. Our favourite looks are when eyes are smoky and lips left nude or when eyes have just a sweep of mascara and lips are bold. We repinned images of Alexa Chung who pulled off the natural look fantastically with a simple hairstyle, smoky brown eyes and a sweep of pink lipstick. Her look gives an air of effortlessness, yet she still looks amazing. In contrast to Alexa’s look, we repinned a picture of Rosie Huntington Whiteley with really bold red lips. The deep colour of her lips contrasted with her blonde hair and barely there eyeshadow to give a full blow glamourous look. We also really rated Illasmasqua’s looks as they were simply out of the ordinary. We think these looks would look great on a display on an occasion such as Halloween as they would really make the mannequins stand out. Finally, we also repinned our favourite nail art designs, from glitter to cats to Pikachu, there really is a nail art trend for everybody.
